  Of all the professions related to the movie industry, perhaps one of the most complex and least acknowledged is that of the producer.

  I, like many others, began producing films because the movies fascinated me. At a very early age I learned that the producer is the key element that "pulls the strings".

  * PRODUCING FILMS IN SPAIN.

  Ever since the Salamanca Talks in the 1950s when Juan Antonio Bardem called our Spanish Cinema an emaciated industry, no one has done much to develop it efficiently.

  * THE CHALLENGE POSED BY BORDERS.

  Some of us producers try to make movies that are high quality, commercial and exportable. Although it is true that today Spanish cinema has a greater presence in the global market and international film festivals, this forward motion is led by selective directors who have paved the way through their accumulated prestige, experience and making increasingly better films.

  * AUTER CINEMA VERSUS ALL- ROUND PRODUCTION CINEMA.

  In Spain, devotion to auteur films, inherited from the French "Nouvelle Vague" and badly understood in general, has prevented the development of genuine, all-round producers.
