Some of us producers try to make
movies that are high quality, commercial and exportable. Although
it is true that today Spanish cinema has a greater presence in the
global market and international film festivals, this forward motion
is led by selective directors who have paved the way through their
accumulated prestige, experience and making increasingly better
films.
In Spain today there are at least 20
directors, with very different sensitivities, who are producing
modern, varied, intelligent and commercial films.
What is required is to insist on the
need to develop more and better projects, research and understand
the demands of the various markets and avoid financial disasters.
This way we will gain the confidence of new investors that are
cropping up in the film industry and who are attracted by the
development of telecommunications.
We producers must, without
neglecting our domestic market, internationalize our creative
proposals, making them universal in an effort to produce exportable
films. Let us not forget that the Spanish market is small, it is
difficult to amortize a film beyond a certain point and more so to
make a reasonable profit. In order to be able to develop ambitious
projects with a long reach, two lines of action must be designed.
In the first place, it is necessary to make films that appeal to
the public in order to be successful at the box office in the
Spanish market and wean viewers away from Hollywood films.
Secondly, they must be high quality films in artistic and
production terms making them capable of seducing foreign buyers so
as to be distributed outside our borders.
