This one is a very important
character -nobody except Hannaford himself is more important- and
the role is perfect for Fernando [Rey]. We need him to be with
Huston for four days and another two days without him.
The problem here is obviously the
same as with the other actors: for him to be available at the same
time as we can count on Huston.
Fernando is totally indispensible.
There is no other Spanish actor who speaks English, that can play
this role.
Equally important, from the point
of view of Spanish nationality, is the fact that there is no other
leading role -we could even say a stellar role- in the movie that
can be played by a Spaniard. It is therefore a top priority to know
the dates when Huston will be available and to ensure that we can
count on Fernando during these same dates. This is something that
cannot be left to chance. If it means that we have to start
shooting before the time we have envisaged or postpone it beyond
that time, we will simply be forced to do so and abide by the
circumstances. [...]
