LA REINA ANÓNIMA (Informal English title: THE ANONYMOUS QUEEN) . Gonzalo Suárez (Fotogramas).

LA REINA ANÓNIMA

I think "La reina anónima" (The Anonymous Queen) is one of those films which, when I learn to make movies, I will have to shoot again. Although by then it will be too late because I'm afraid this is one of those things that only happens once in a lifetime. It is a spontaneous film, from the very beginning, starting with the script. It happened suddenly and without any "a priori" pretensions of anything. Just the mere fact that I did it is, in my view, a positive thing. That is, I believe, because the film is alive so to speak. And at a time when Spanish cinema is in such "sad" shape, it is healthy to have it there. I think if happiness is possible, then it is a duty to try to provide it. The worst sin in films and in life is boredom. One terrible mistake we have made for a long time is to make movies that produce problems instead of fulfilling dreams.

I believe there are many anonymous Queens, many anonymous heroes that are more attractive than the ones we find in films and books; above all, in the history books. You suddenly realize that someone, no matter how normal they may seem, is living through the same intensive adventure than the fashionable heroes we see in the movies. Every person, man or woman, is a hero, a king or a queen. All it takes is for him or her to discover that, to discover they can govern their own lives. And that is in this film.

It is also the story about that next-door neighbor we all have. That neighbor is what we are, or what we are and don't know we are, or what we would like to be. Each of us has the neighbor we deserve. Ana Luz has the neighbor she deserves too.

This film could be termed neo-realistic because nothing that cannot happen happens in it. That is a norm I imposed on myself some time ago. I don't like fantasy; I don't like the flying donkey, I just like the donkey.
