LA PASIÓN TURCA (Informal English title: TURKISH PASSION). Vicente Aranda (El Mundo).

LA PASION TURCA

The offer to film "La pasión turca" (Turkish Passion) enabled me to discover that this movie was also in keeping with my contention: "We all want to be someone else". To carry on searching in that direction, we have the leading character, Desideria Oliván, a woman who wants to be somebody else. She doesn't now that, but she will end up being a totally different woman. She travels to Istanbul and, from the very moment that a man who knows nothing of her world, touches her, she realizes she wants to be another woman. She doesn't like being the way she is. Emotionally, this is a 180º turn-around in her gray, provincial, idle life. In the case of most women, this is a love story stretched to the limit. Or as Ana Belén, who plays Desideria, says: "It is a story about love and emotional rage" [...]

I have focused in the story of a woman who, at a given moment, discovers that she carries another being inside her, a being she wishes had never come out and but has done so in a violent emotional way [...] There is also an additional subject in the film: the meeting in bed of two cultures, as I have pointed out before in some occasion. But that is just one background aspect of the movie.
