Jaime Baily's novel tells the story
of a young man's search and struggle to find a space in life, an
identity based on his personal convictions. Looking over my
previous films would show a similar starting point in almost all of
them. All the characters have to confront an adverse environment
and hostile external conditions. In this case the conflict is
sexual identity and its battle against hypocrisy, male chauvinism
and social conventions [...]
I would say that it has the
elements of a teen film (a genre on the subject almost exists
already) but with the elements and intensity I always try to confer
on my movies. And of course, it contains strong criticism although
on this occasion the characters and the atmospheres, unlike in my
other films, correspond to another social class. We are dealing
here with the upper class of Lima (Peru). The novel describes, with
no inhibitions, the cruelty, cynicism and hypocrisy from a
perspective that is sometimes amusing and, at other times, as hard
and terrible as reality itself.
