This is not a film about drugs.
Drugs are just an excuse to get the characters to face extreme
situations. Had somebody like Eloy de la Inglesia made the
movie it would have been a harsh film. I have made it milder by
giving it a magical treatment. I am not interested in the realism
of the physical trip the characters take. What I am interested in
is in the journey of their souls; their inner trip [...]
Reading "Edie", by Jean Stain was very useful to us. This is a
book that tells the story of a girl from a wealthy family, like the
Rockefeller's, who moved in the world of Andy Warhol, drugs and
fashion of the 1960s. This has been very interesting to see
what goes through María's head, a girl from a good family who gets
hooked on drugs. Rafa, despite being a junkie, doesn't dramatize
the situation. He has no past or future. His concept of life is far
less traumatic [...]
In the movie we neither take a stand in favor or against drugs;
what we intend to do is to vindicate the right for drug addicts to
have respectable feelings and for them to live - in their own way -
a love story. In a certain way, the film's ending is happy because
María and Rafa change their lives after going through a hell of a
hard time.
